A lot of my short stories to date have been published in free online venues like Ideomancer, Strange Horizons, and PodCastle. These sites have some of the best short fiction I’ve read (or, in the case of PodCastle, heard), and because of them I’ve discovered stories and authors I never would have found otherwise.
If you like the fiction published by an online venue, send them something to show your appreciation. If you don’t like their fiction, send them a donation in hopes that you can sway their opinion through the judicious use of cash. (I’m not saying it’ll work, but it’s worth a try and five bucks, right?) If you’re ambivalent about their fiction, send them a big donation, because really, nothing sweeps away ambivalence like a large financial transaction.

Dear Ms. Ronald,
We are very excited at the Falmouth Public Library to be hosting our first Science Fiction Author Panel on Wednesday, April 1. We would be honored if you would be able to participate and speak about your novel: SPIRAL HUNT. This will be a panel of three or four New England authors, talking about their recent or newly published work. The program will begin at 7 PM and will over by 9 PM (library closing time).
Our format is fairly loose. Each author will each have 15-20 minutes to talk about anything – a newly published or forthcoming book, the process of writing science fiction or curious incidents pertaining to researching the book. Then, I’ll open up discussion to the audience for their questions. If necessary, I may break the ice with a warm-up question, which any or all authors are encouraged to comment on, but this part of the program is usually quite lively.
At the close of the program we provide time for the authors to sell and sign their books. We ask authors to bring copies of their books to sell. There are three independent bookstores in town, and we do notify them of our programs, but the Trustees will not enter into a relationship with any one store to sell books at Library programs. Frequently, authors will bring earlier books to sell as well.
The local community access television station FCTV usually tapes Library programs for rebroadcast. Many library users and townsfolk have commented on seeing Library author programs on TV, and we believe these programs expand the audience for an author’s work. If you have any objection to the videotaping, please let me know.
If you would like to participate in this event, please reply at your earliest convenience and I’ll send you the directions.
Very truly yours,
Adrienne Latimer
Reference Librarian
