One of the fun things about doing research for something new — aside from that moment when some new bit of information slots into place and suddenly the entire plot becomes not just clear but so obvious I can’t believe no one else has seen this yet* — is finding the occasional weird fact or phrase that just sticks in my head.

For example, I think I’ve found one of the first references to polluting the Charles River: a permit to allow people to dump “beasts entralls and garbidg” at a certain point along the shore.  It’s got absolutely no relevance to anything I’m working on, but something about the phrase just amuses me greatly.  Maybe it’d make a good band name.  Or album title.

(This is all by way of saying that I’m researching something new, working on it right now, and…actually a little behind on my word count for the week.  Expect the usual light-to-nonexistent blogging over the next few weeks.)

* Yes, I’m aware that many conspiracy theories start this way.  Tinfoil hats are excellent sources of inspiration.
